2020 Primary Canvass FAQs

Canvass Timeline

The Board of Canvassers will open canvass at 9:00 AM on Thursday, May 21, 2020 via Zoom.

Due to concerns around COVID-19 our canvass will be held via live stream on Youtube and Zoom.

Our canvassing rooms will be live streamed to Youtube from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in our warehouse and office.

Our Board of Canvassers will review ballots every day of canvassing at 3:00 PM via Zoom.

Canvass begins on Thursday, May 21, 2020 and runs until Friday, June 12th. 
Canvassing will occur Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM with Board of Canvassers reviewing ballots from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. These meetings are scheduled until 6:00 PM but could run shorter or longer depending on number of ballots. 

These times and dates are subject to change based on the ballots we receive daily. Please review the canvass schedule for the most current dates and times.

All questions will be answered by the Director, Cynthia Remmey, or her designee. 

Challenging at Canvass

Anyone is able to make a challenge during canvassing under COMAR 33.08.01.08. The challenge must be made at the time the ballot or provisional ballot application is presented for acceptance or rejection. The right to challenge a ballot or provisional application is waived if it is not made at this time. 

The challenge must be made at the time the ballot or provisional ballot application is presented for acceptance or rejection.

  1. Indicate in the Zoom chat: your first and last name, the ballot/application number and your challenge.  
  2. You will have one hour from your challenge in the chat to complete the Canvass Challenge Form and email a copy (a picture is acceptable) to our Director, Cynthia Remmey, at clremmey@harfordcountymd.gov. 
  3. All challenged ballots will be set aside according to their challenge time. They will be addressed by the Board of Canvassers accordingly.
  4. If you do not provide the Canvass Challenge Form within the hour of your challenge, the ballot will be processed based on the original board decision.
